Studies show that women are better at creating and keeping the peace in post-conflict societies because women are generally less violent than their male counterparts. In Rwanda"s most recent election, women won 49 percent of the seats in parliament--the highest proportion in the world. Increasingly, citizens in such societies are turning to women for help. The Iraqi Constitution last month, guarantees women 25 percent of the seats in parliament. Perhaps the greatest hope is that increasing the ranks of women in government will help prevent future wars. During the Bosnian war, I asked the prime minister of Bosnia, "If half of the people around the table at the very beginning had been women, would there have been a war?" And he said, "No. Women think long and hard before they send their children out to kill other peoples" children." Are women actually more peaceful than men? Looking at Cameroon, Bolivia and Malaysia, a recent study found that when women have a greater say in spending priorities, they spend less on the military. "When women reach 30 or 40 percent of government, you get much more funding for health care and education."

　　A Chinese painting is usually thought of as work of ink and water on rice paper. But a newgeneration of Chinese artists is drawing inspiration from Western art to develop a differentstyle. Wu Guanzhong (1919--2010), is one of those who have borrowed foreign ideas whilestaying true to his cultural traditions. Wu studied Western painting in Paris in the 1940s. Heformed his own ideas about modern Western art. He started to bring together Chinese andWestern elemetns in his work. Wu"s paintings have the color sense and principles of Westernpaintings, with the spirit and tonal variations(色調(diào)變化)of ink that are typical of Chineseartwork. Under his brush, natural scenery is reduced to its basics, in simple but powerfulforms.

　　Wu"s paintings now sell for record prices. He gave 72 works of art to Zhejiang Museum of Artand China Academy of Fine Arts earlier this month.

　　"Wu has written a special chapter in the Chinese art history of the 20th century." said QianLinxiang, deputy director of the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. "His paintings gobetween oil painting and ink painting, and draw Western art into the poetic Chinese style."
